In The Beginning

The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands

day after day they pour forth speech,

night after night they display knowledge.

There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth.
Their voice to the ends of the world.           Psalm 19:1-4

Saints or Sinners?

Many years ago, went to my first Camp Meeting.  It was at Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska. I don't remember the speeches, the sermons, the people.  I do remember 2 songs..."Christ For Me" and "Jesus, There's something About That Name."  And I remember thinking "How wonderful it is to be among all these Saints.  I was a newly baptized Christian.
Twenty three years old, with a loving, kind, beautiful husband and a prescious 2 year old daughter.
I believed that I had joined a Church of  Saints.  My first surprise came at a Dorcas Meeting.  Here was all the saintly ladies.  One of the lady saints was. absent.  Listening to the conversation I soon discovered....the missing member was not a saint. These dear precious lady do gooders listed the missing saints faults, sins and shortcomings.  My first awakening..
We are all sinners saved by the grace of our God.  These dear ladies, I learned to love them all and I still do.  Will be seeing them in Heaven.
I look back over the years, I wonder how many people have I disappointed, with my remarks about someone?  Believe me, I make them.  Thinking how disappointed I was in my lady saints, speaking unkindly.  How much more has my Lord and Savior been sadden by my words, my actions, my thoughts.
Lord Jesus, forgive me.  I don't deserve one drop of the precious blood you shed for me. And yet you suffered humilation, pain, separation from your Father...
No, we don't deserve your love, your forgiveness, your loving kindnes to us.  And we expect you to answer our prayers.  To save us from Satan's attacks.

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us.., that we should be callled the children of God.  1st John. 3:1.

Goodbye Summer

Here we are again.  At the back side of summer.  Winter is knocking at the door.  Just yesterday morning, we woke to a beautiful white snow. Snow, about 8 inches.  My grandson, Jeremy shook    the snow from the trees, so we wouldn't have broken branches.  The trees still have beautiful green leaves.  Not for long, I guess.

Yes, it was beautiful.  But, I'm not snow person.  It means winter.  Winter means cold weather, coats, boots, gloves, slushy roads, turning on the furnace.  I'm a summer person.  Pretty flower beds, vegetable garden, picnics, sitting in the porch swing on warm summer nights, walks in the park.     The neighbor kids playing out after dark.  Just a wonderful time.

I'll get use to you, Mr. Winter.  We'll be friends.  Spending evening in by the fireplace.  Sunday aftenoons hearing the guys yelling at the football on television.  Making plans for Thanksgiving.  Checking your Christmas list..present buying, mailing cards...And putting up the Christmas tree.    Turn around and we're coloring Easter eggs.  Before we realize it, we're looking at seed catalogs.   That beautiful sun will melt the snow and O' Blessed summer, you will return.
All things considered, maybe a change of seasons is a good thing.
Our Heavenly Father is so wise and wonderful.  Thank you, Father your world is perfect.

As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.                                   Mathew 24:32

Bird Watching

This has been a great summer for the humming birds.  I must have over a dozen at a time...Besides all the other birds.....Oh, how I love summer and all the little visitors it brings.  My little rabbit friends still make a visit and I leave them unnessary carrots, which they munch on.  Since their are so many other little green plants for them to chow down.  Then the chipmunks...and the birds...it seems like there are hundreds flying around.  I have a pair of doves that must be mates...they are regular visitors, I think they are the same ones that came last year.  I have read that doves mate for life...these seem like they have been together a long time.  Back to my humming birds....I hope they stay for a while.  Does anyone know how to keep the other birds from their feeders....They have feeders of their own.

Look at the birds of the air, they do not sow or reap, or store away in barn, yet your Heavenly Father feeds them.    Matthew 7:26

Scenes From The Past

This weekend was a trip back to the past ...in a lot of ways.  We took off about 10 o'clock in the morning...south on Highway 285.  Our intention was to visit the little towns tucked away in the valleys and mountains ...It was a beautiful day...Sunny and warm. The mountains all around us were beautiful all covered with snow.  On our list was Romeo, Antonito, Manassa, and La Jara.  These are little towns  that is really a stretch, that have been settled by the Indians, the Mexicans, the Mormons and strange as it may seem...there are some Amish living in the area.  This area has such an interesting history.  Sad to say...so much of it is ..just that - history.  So many building are boarded up, decaying...looking like one of those old ghost towns in the wild west movies.

First we come to La Jara, very old town.  They have  a grocery store , a restaurant..the usual small town stores...a post office, as we drive out of town, a gas station, a run down motel.and of course a liquor store. Across the road and a block farther; on the other side of the street.  A Catholic Church with a big sign that says "Bingo...Sunday afternoon"..  Across the street  and  down, the  road,  is a beautiful big Mormon Church.

We go on down the highway about seven miles turn off the highway, over the railroad tracks just a half mile or so.

There we see the old decaying town of Romeo.  Same old story, old buildings that once were the hope and promise of the owner.  They did business with the locals.  Families  raising their children...going about their lives....Now, gone, all gone. But as usual one business....hangs on...A liquor store.....??

Five miles down the road east is the town of Manassa.  The story is, and I'm not all that knowledgeable about this part of history, ( must look it up)....that Manassa wanted the Railroad to go through their little settlement, but instead it went by Romeo.   Doesn't seem to have done them much good.  There are some beautiful cared for fields as we drive along ...must be raising hay. Also a few farm houses.  We pass this home that has a long shed...housing 4 Amish buggies.

The town of Manasea: Famous as the birthplace of Jack Dempsey.

The have a little museum dedicated to him and his history.

There is also a statue and a little park.  The younger people would probably not know who he was.  Born in 1895 and died in 1925.  To my dad he was really a great fighter.  How did he ever get to New York from this little town?

Along the "main street" we see this little Mexican restaurant...So we decided to give it a try. It is filled with the locals...good sign...?  The food was delicious...I had a Chimmy Changa (whatever?)...We decided it was well worth the drive....whenever  we get hungry for Mexican food.

On through town....not much here...a nice park....2 big churches....One Catholic and one Mormon....(the Mormons have quite an interesting history here).  We turn off on a side road that promises to take us back of the Flattop Mountain.....An interesting surprise....It seems a step back in time.....Indian teepees...really...and Indians.  One of the men on a horse comes to meet us.

He seemed friendly enough.  But said they really didn't encourage visitors...He did let us take his picture....but no more.I'm quite sure Indians didn't really live there...I thought maybe they were taking pictures, camping, whatever.   Then we took our curiosity and retraced our steps.   As we come back to the main road...we decide we have had enough for the day...so we head back toward Manassa.  Along side the road we see these little road signs.....Strange....we hadn't really run across any of the Amish farms....Maybe farther down the road...We'll check it out next time.

We're tired so we decided to head for home.....We stopped at Little Caesar's and bought a pizza.  It's been a good day.

Moon over San Juan mountains

Here it is about 6:30  in the morning and the moon is just going down behind my house.  I love to take pictures of the sky here because it is so beautiful....that I love to catch the difference from one mountain peak to the next.  The moon comes up over the San de Cristo mountains from my front porch and goes down behind the San Juan mountains..on my back porch.. Well it is interesting to me.  I love the changes of colors .....God has a wonderful paint brush.

The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another, and star differ from star in splendor.

Buy American?

It has been a long winter and it hasn't let up.  It started before Thanksgiving and here we are approaching St. Patrick's Day.  Then Easter, the last day of March.  Can you believe (of course you can) Walmart took down the Valentine sale items and started putting up Easter Baskets, Easter bunnies, Easter eggs.  Please, Walmart, let us enjoy our lives.  They go by fast enough.  And all these holidays mean to you is money, money.

When I was a child, we made our Easter Baskets out of Quaker Oatmeal boxes, for the colored eggs and maybe a chocolate egg with our name on it...or maybe not.  We had a great family day..hiding colored eggs, it was a family day.  All right, you say boring.

There's nothing boring about waking up and finding this big Easter basket wrapped in cellophane, that you saw yesterday at Walmart's?   Do you realize Walmart has become our Easter Bunny, our Santa Claus. Our country shows it patriotism by flying American flags, made in China...Eat on red, white and blue paper plates...I'm sure most of our fireworks are Chinese made.  At Thanksgiving it's napkins with turkeys, pumpkins, etc. that decorate our table. Made in China   You think about it.  China has stolen our holidays with the help of Walmart and the American public..(you and me)

Walmart and China has stolen our American way of life...or did we give it to them and paid them them take it?

Early Winter Morning...

As I slipped out the door this morning to feed the bunnies...the sky looked so beautiful.  I slipped back in the house and got my camera ....So here is what I think are some fantastic pictures of the mountains, the early morning sky and maybe a picture of Emily and Sara...

This is just to give you an idea of the beauty of the morning sky.  And the mountains.  Oh, yes.
I go back in side and my girls are still in bed....Are you crazy, taking pictures at this hour.

Sabbath's Day's Blessing

We had a light snow last night.  But the sun came up early, bright and warm.  It going to be a very nice Sabbath Day.

I have never made a point in my writing to say that I am a Sabbath keeper.  A Seventh Day Adventist Sabbath keeper.  Actually just like every other Christian, I believe that we should "Do unto others as we would have others treat us.

I believe we are all sinners, saved by the blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
I believe in the Ten Commandments...Yes ...all of them.  Including #4

Remember, the Sabbath Day to keep it holy.

Most importantly....I believe in our Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ who gave his life for a sinner like me.

For great is your love, higher than the heavens...Psalm 4:108

The Caretakers

Sara and I have had a very busy winter.  We have to sit by the window and keep track of all the little birds that failed to go south for the winter.  Wonder where they stay?  Then we have all the little bunnies, I think some of them  live under our porch.  And the neighbor dogs...don't they have a home?

The lady that lives here with us, keeps feeding those bunnies.  Every morning before we are up we hear her going out the door to throw carrots to the little bunnies.  And they come hopping.  Sara and I sit at the window and bark.  Evidently, they have a hearing problem, because they

completely ignore us.  "We're up here!  ( and if we ever get out, you had better run.)  The lady thinks we don't notice, but she puts carrots out at night.  Does she think they need a midnight snack..?

There is someone always coming and going here.  Some say, "Oh, what cute puppies.  Come here.  I want to hold you."
"No!'  We run to the bedroom and hide under the bed."
There's this one lady, she brings her big, furry slobbering dog...and ....he eats all of our food, drinks our water.  And he chews up our toys.  I'm glad it was Sara's clown, I don't want now big dog germs....
Since it's such a nice day, we'll probably spend the day outdoors.  We have a lot of fun.  The neighbors dogs , there's two.  One is a big, tall, skinny dog and one's really nice, he's a Beagle.     We look through porch railing and bark at them.  We shake our little tails.  I heard her say, " I hope they don't shake them off".    Is that possible?

We have it pretty nice.  We have the run of the house.  We are free to go in and outdoors.  And we have this lady that lives with us trained pretty well.  So, all in all  it's a good life.

Oh, how great is thy goodness.    Psalm 31:19

There Will Be Days.....

Did you ever have one of those days....where you just couldn't get all your ducks in a row and have them standing?  You get the idea, that's how my day has been.

It started in the kitchen, I was putting the dishes in the dishwasher when the phone rang.  As I was answering it, I noticed my plants needed to be watered.  While I was giving them a drink, a friend stopped by.  We discussed the news, the neighbors, the pastors sermons, well you name it.  After she leaves I go back to the kitchen, my daughter calls.  Did I want to run to town with her? Well, yes. I hurriedly ran a comb through my hair, changed my shoes.  Linda was waiting.

We stop by the Post Office to mail a package, by the bank.  Then we did our shopping.  It was close to noon, so we decided to go for lunch.  We went to "Little Liu Ann's" Tea Shop.  I don't know who her baker is but she has the best pies.  Instead of lunch we decided on coconut cream pie and coffee.  As we left I bought some blueberry muffins to take home.  Linda bought a blueberry pie.

By the time we get home the afternoon is slipping by.  In the house, I still haven't put the dishes in the dishwasher. I vowed I would not answer the door until everything was in shape.

3'oclock.  I had the dishes put up, the bed made, a load of clothes in the dryer.  Ran the sweeper in the living room, swept the kitchen floor.  Made a salad, put it in the fridge. Fed the girls, Emily & Sara.

By 5 0'clock I had my shower...checked the mail.  Decided I had time to catch up on Facebook and my emails..

All in all, it has been a good day.

If you are not the kind to let dirty dishes bother you. Well, they do me.  But it was still a good day.

Thank you, Lord.

I will bless the Lord at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.               Psalm 34:1

Tea Parties, Pets, ...Laughter

It looks like a beautiful day in the making.  Sun shining so bright.  Even my plants seem to be lifting their leaves to enjoy the warm sunshine.  It's a good day.  Thank you, Lord.

I have to get busy.  I'm going to a tea today.  There are 6 of us ladies that are retired school employees that try to get together every month or so.  Have tea and cookies and talk (and a lot of laughs).  We talk about our pets, bring pictures and stories and we laugh.

No one is allowed to mention husbands, children, grandchildren....only pets.  Reason:  Each thinks their husband is the most wonderful man in the world.....or on the other hand...the worst..  Their children might be the most beautiful, most clever, smart, gifted.  Or on the other hand..........?  So, they are all off limits.

Now pets, we get quite caught up in these precious little or big members of our families.  But as a rule we keep it on a pleasant level.  Bringing pictures and stories of our furry friends.

This is my two little darlings.  Emily and Sara...Emily in back is the boss,  Sara  is more laid back.

Since we have all spent at least 20 years of our lives working with children and young adults...These are not off limits.  So we laugh and tell our stories...As Jimmy Durante use to say, "I have a million of them."  I think a life spent with young people keeps you young in your attitude.  You will be more tolerant of the young...You just can't help but love them.  ...All of them.

We have a little devotional each time by one of us.  We each put ten dollars in the kitty, which we will use for some good cause as the need arises.  After we have chatted, eaten, laughed and remembered...we part until next month.   Stay well, dear friends...

This is the day the Lord has made.  I will rejoice and be glad in it.
             Psalm 118:24

Mountain Beauty

It is a beautiful February day.  Not a cloud in the sky, it's so clear and blue.  The mountains are a snow covered painting.  So,  we decided to take a hike in the hills. We packed a lunch put in the little coffee pot, some coffee, sandwiches, cookies, apples.  Then we took off.

Our destination was the mountains above the sand dunes.  First, we go through the Ranger Station, then past the path to the dunes.  Back up the road to the camp grounds which was deserted.  We drove around until we found our trail we wanted to take.  Parked the car in a camp site area.  There were signs posted Bear Area...but we hoped and decided they were hibernating.  Again, it is such a beautiful day, the air so fresh.  The mountains above us are covered with snow.  We start up the trail,  about half an hour later we took off our jackets and tied them around our waists.  The mountains are post card pretty in the summer, but here  in late February..the scene is one you will never forget.  We can look out and see the valley below.  Such peace...with all the turmoil in the world...there are places where the peace and majesty of God is felt.  This is one of those places.

About 2 o'clock we decided we had better head back down the trail.  It was a lot easier going back down than the hike up. When we got back to the Camp site where we had parked the car. Hungry and tired we made a little fire, filled the coffee pot with snow..While we waited for the coffee to boil we explored the other sites...debating on which we would like in the summer, for a few days camping. Being very hungry, we barely waited for the coffee to boil, while we go out our sandwiches, cookies and cups.  Then we a sat around eating, meditating on the beauty around us, tired and happy.

We  drove home in silence, tired, happy.  Reflecting on what a good day.

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

What's On The Menu

I'm expecting company and I haven't decide what  to bake, fry...toss together.  But while I was looking for some ideas, I came across this recipe for cookies...I will cut it in half.  The lady says she asked for the recipe while eating at Neiman-Marcus.  The waitress said it would cost two fifty.  I said okay...put it on my bill.....Well, later she got the bill...the recipe was $250  not $2.50 as she thought.  Try as she could they would not refund her money.  Said she already had the recipe.  So being very angry....she is sharing the recipe with anyone that wants it.

SHE SAID SEND IT TO EVERY PERSON YOU KNOW...This is really a terrific recipe.
I'll see for myself.....

Neiman-Marcus Cookies

2 cups butter
24 oz. chocolate chips
4 cups flout
2 cups brown sugar
2 tsp soda
1 tsp salt
2 cups sugar
1 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated)
5 cups blended oatmeal
4 eggs
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp vanilla
3 cups nuts..your choice

Measure oatmeal and blend in a blender to a fine powder.  Cream the butter and both sugars.    Add the eggs and vanilla , mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda.  Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar, and nuts.  Roll into balls and place 2 inches apart on a cookie sheet.
Bake for 10 minuites at 375 degrees.  Makes 112 cookies.

Make no claims for this...I'm just going to try it myself.

Choke Cherry....(continued part 2)

Next morning when we went by to take some "Ladies Home Journal magazines that Mama was sending to Jenny.  ""We went right into the dining room, curious to see how Grandma #1 and Alfred were hitting it off.
I'll be if right there instead of Grandma #1 and Alfred was a big pictures of flowers in a gold frame.
The aunts said it looked cheap.  Even mama said, "Perhaps it is in bad taste.  But me, I thought it was beautiful.  It was one thing I was hoping grandpa would leave to me someday.

From that day on, Grandpa insisted that Jenny would set the table with nothing with the good china.
The family gathered again at Christmas.  Some of the dishes had a crack or two.   The aunts rolled their eyes and lookes at each other.  They had learned a valuable lesson, to keep their mouths shut and to lay off Jenny.

I Am Truly A Woman Blessed

57 years ago.....On January 21....I went to the hospital in Loveland, Colorado.  After I was admitted and assigned a room.  My Dr. came...told me yes it was time to deliver the baby we had been anxiously waiting for.  My nurse Ruth Mae also a friend....came and did all the preparations they do at this time.  My husband walked back and forth up and down the hall.....Then Dr. Brown took off his coat...and his shirt....I remember he was wearing suspenders...sat back in his chair and said, "Well, we'll just wait."   So...I waited, Russell paced the hall, Dr. Brown napped...Ruth Mae dropped in every time she got a chance....plus the custodian, the desk clerk...while I waited.   Then just before daylight, the next day, January 22....We were blessed with a beautiful precious boy.  That has been, a joy, a comfort and a gift from God that was such a blessing to Linda, his sister ..Russell his father and me.  Happy Birthday, Dana.  You are so loved.

Choke Cherry Jelly ...

When I was growing up we had a lot of relation.  We didn't have much money...but love by the bucket.  And our fun was clean, kind and times to be remembered.  If you lived as I did back when life was less rushed...You might relate to some of the same memories I have...beginning with my grandpa

Mel Stoffer:
A big man.  He looked like one of the giant redwood trees of California.  People said his hands were as big as hams.  When he walked he took long strides.  He could cover a city block in less time than it took me, with my short legs to get out of the swing and down off the porch.  His snowy white moustache topped a gruff mouth, but even in the rare times of anger, the twinkle never left his blue eyes.

This was our grandpa.  He was the Sheriff of Reno County.  Besides having his freight business and a lumber yard.  He was also quite a man with the town ladies.  After our "real" Grandma died, he married a prim little spinster with a pinched mouth and Puritan ways.  She did her best to convert Grandpa.  Even went so far as to h
aving a nice black suit made for him.  Just for church.  "That's fine, Nettie," Grandpa said.  "I'll just save that and wear it for my funeral."

She never knew that he kept his promise, because she passed on after being "Mrs. Stoffer #2 for about three years.

Grandpa wasn't much on grieving because eight months later he married again.  To a short, stout lady named Jennie Mauck,  This caused quite a ripple of gossip around town.  Most of it carried by some of the ladies that had entertained the idea of being "Mrs. Stoffer #3 themselves.

We liked our new grandma, Jenny.  That's what we called her, "Jenny". We would arrive at her backdoor, unexpected and unannounced.  She would greet us with "Oh my, here's our lord and ladyship, come to have tea I suspect.  With that we knew we were welcome.  Sometimes we would have hard cookies and sour lemonade.  But who complains when you are having tea with a duchess?

Benny and I thought our Aunts gave us a bad time.  It was nothing to the way they treated Jenny. Always reminding her that the roof she lived under had been built for their mother.  The roses in the garden had been planted by their mother  The silverware, the china and on down the line, had belonged to their dear departed mother.  Jenny seemed to ignore their remarks.

Until, it was Thanksgiving.  All the relativives were gathered in Grandpa's big house.  Jenny had been working all week.  She had dusted, scrubbed and shined.  She had roasted a big turkey, baked pies and rolls.  The table was spread with a white tablecloth.  A big bouquet of chrysanthemums were right in the middle of the table.  Napkins, candles, the good china, the whole bit.

We hadn't been there very long when Aunt Rennie looking like a bobcat that had it's tail caught in a trap, landed on Jenny with all fours.

"Jenny, you surely aren't going to use mama's good china.  Why poor mama will turn over in her grave if we get a chip in one her lovely dishes." Grandma #1 was looking down on all of us from a large picture above the mantel.  I, for one, thought she was enjoying this festive occasion.  Jenny tried to be nice.   "We'll just have to be careful and not chip them.  Won't we?"

It went on like that all day. Both aunts, Freida and Rennie saying that "having mama's portrait here in the dining room was almost like having her here with us."

"My," Aunt Frieda pursing her thin lips, remarked, " Mama would surely disapprove of the coffee stain on her good tablecloth."

Like most men, Grandpa thought Jenny was paying even less attention to the two sisters than he was.  Not so.

The day after Thanksgiving Benny and I went over to Jenny's to see if there was a chance of getting some leftover turkey, or a piece of pumpkin pie.  We heard pounding in the dining room. It was Jenny.

She was pounding so hard, she didn't hear us come in, and stand in the doorway.  We hadn't been standing there very long when we looked up to see that we had been joined by grandpa.  None of us said a word, we were busy watching Jenny.

She was standing on a chair in front of the fireplace, with a hammer in her hand and a big nail.
It was just like she was desecrating a grave, because right there beside Grandma #1's picture she was pounding a great big nail.

We waited for grandpa's explosion.  I wondered what he was going to do to Jenny.  He just waited.  She got down off the chair, got this big picture, climbed back up on the chair, turned the picture around, that's when we saw who it was.  We gasped.  It was Alfred, that was his name.  It was Jenny's first husband. Poor Jenny, Grandpa was going to blow his top.  What he did was throw back his head and laugh.  He laughed until tears came into his eyes.   Jenny turned around, surprised to see us standing there, still defiant.

"Jenny, you are a card."  Grandpa then took his big hands and lifted her off the chair, gave her a squeeze and said again, "A real card.  You know those two women are as much a pain in the butt to me, as they are to you."
